As of Jan. 1, 2025, the measure for follow-up after emergency department visits for mental health (FUM) will include more diagnoses, which may result in members needing follow-up appointments. Members seen in emergency department visits for substance use (FUA) also need follow-up appointments.
Medical health care providers and behavioral health care providers can use qualified billing and diagnostic codes to close the FUM and FUA HEDIS® gaps.
You can help close these gaps when a visit takes place within 7 days of discharge from an emergency department visit for mental health or substance use. We consider day 1 to be the day after the patient is discharged. If a situation arises where a patient is unable to be seen within 7 days, you can schedule an appointment within 30 days of discharge.
Medical and mental health care providers can use the following codes to close FUM and FUA numerator gaps in care. However, these are not intended to be a directive of your billing practice.
