New York Medicaid: Referrals not required for most specialty services

Members can get a referral from their PCP in 15 specialty categories

To help reduce administrative burden for network health care professionals, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan does not require referrals for most specialty services.

Members will only need a referral from their primary care provider (PCP) to see health care professionals in the following specialty categories:

  • Allergy and immunology
  • Dermatology
  • Endocrinology
  • Gastroenterology
  • General surgery
  • Neurological surgery
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Otolaryngology
  • Physical medicine and rehabilitation/physiatry
  • Plastic surgery
  • Podiatry
  • Pulmonary medicine
  • Sports medicine
  • Urology
  • Vascular surgery

Submitting referrals

When referrals are required, you can submit them using the Referrals solution on the UnitedHealthcare Provider Portal. To access the portal, visit UHCprovider.com and select Sign In in the upper-right corner.
