Colorado: Prior authorization waiver for inpatient transfers

To help relieve administrative burden due to staffing shortages caused by COVID-19, influenza, RSV and other respiratory illnesses, we’re implementing a prior authorization waiver for transfers to inpatient facilities in Colorado. This applies to fully insured UnitedHealthcare and Rocky Mountain Health Plans (IFP) commercial plan members only. Prior authorization for inpatient transfers is still required for members of other plans.

In alignment with Colorado Executive Order D-2022-045 and Division of Insurance Emergency Regulations, this waiver extends through March 10, 2023.

Admission notification is still required. In most cases, notification of inpatient admission is provided to UnitedHealthcare by the hospital or facility through the UnitedHealthcare Provider Portal or an EDI 278N transmission that requires no intervention on the part of your staff.
