Rhode Island Medicaid: Americans with Disabilities Act compliance

We want to remind you about Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements that apply when caring for UnitedHealthcare Community Plan members who use stretchers or wheelchairs.

You must comply with Title III of the ADA Requirements for your patients’ physical access to wheelchairs and stretchers. This includes the following:

• You cannot discriminate against a patient with a disability
• When a patient arrives at your facility, you are required to have a treatment plan based on their condition and needs, which is considered reasonable accommodation
• You must create policies, practices and procedures to provide a wheelchair or stretcher to the patient

Transportation providers are not required to leave a patient’s stretcher or wheelchair at your health care facility unless it’s their personal mobility device.
