AARP Medicare Supplement: Change to overpayment reimbursement process

ACH payments will be adjusted for balance owed

Beginning February 2026, the overpayment reimbursement process is changing for AARP Medicare Supplement plans from UnitedHealthcare. Whenever possible, electronic payments will be automatically adjusted for the amount owed, eliminating requests for overpayment reimbursements. The change applies only to health care providers who receive electronic benefit payments through Optum Pay.

What’s changing

Currently, we send health care providers a letter with instructions on how to refund benefit overpayments. To help simplify and streamline the process, we’ll recover overpaid funds by offsetting benefit payments for that tax identification number (TIN). If the amount doesn’t cover the overpayment, we’ll send a letter requesting a refund of the total amount.

Notification of the recovery will appear on the Electronic Data Interchanges (EDI) 835 transaction in the form of a reversal claim.

Other options for repayment

  • If you identify an overpayment before we offset a reimbursement, you can call the phone number on the back of the member ID card for instructions on how to refund the amount
  • If UnitedHealthcare pays your claims by check, we’ll send you a recovery letter requesting refund of the overpaid amount

How to prepare

  • Enroll in ACH to take advantage of a streamlined payment and recoupment process
  • Confirm EDI 835 enrollment with your clearinghouse to take advantage of automatic payment posting
