Fraud, Waste and Abuse trainings and monthly sanction monitoring

August 2024

We require UnitedHealthcare Hearing network practices to show evidence of compliance with the requirements for Annual Fraud, Waste and Abuse (FWA) training and monthly Officer of Inspector General (OIG) sanction monitoring.

Our oversight team has also started emailing practices to request the attestations of compliance with annual FWA trainings and monthly OIG sanction monitoring completed by all providers, employees and contractors.

What this means for you

The oversight team will continue to send these requests to all practices over the next several months. These requests will be sent to the email address of the person who last executed the Practice Agreement. Please return the documented evidence of compliance within 30 days of the request.

How to remain compliant

Review the following sections of the Practice Agreement and Provider Reference Guide to ensure your practice is compliant and able to provide evidence of compliance upon request:

  • Sanction monitoring: Practices are to screen all providers, employees and contractors initially upon hiring, and an ongoing basis, by conducting monthly checks for sanctions and/or exclusions to determine whether any of them have been excluded from participation in Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP or any federal health care programs. See section 6.10 of Provider Reference Guide and section 20 of Practice Agreement.
    • We’ll require evidence of monthly sanctions monitoring through the OIG Sanctions and Exclusions Database. For information on how to perform OIG Sanctions and Exclusions searches, review our OIG exclusion database search guide. Practices are not allowed to employ or contract with an individual or entity that has been excluded or debarred.
  • FWA training: We require practices to establish written policies on FWA prevention, detection and remedies for their providers, employees and contractors, and to document annual FWA training of all providers, employees and contractors to be completed annually. See sections 6.4 and 6.5 of Provider Reference Guide and sections 22 and 23 of the Practice Agreement.
    • If you do not have your own FWA training, you and your providers may complete our FWA Training course
